How I Use ChatGPT as a Low Vision and Colorblind User

ChatGPT can be more than a writing tool—it’s an accessibility companion. From reading small print to identifying colors and hex codes, it’s helped me work around low vision and colorblindness in creative, everyday ways.

How I Use ChatGPT as a Low Vision and Colorblind User

One of the most powerful accessibility tools I’ve discovered recently isn’t labeled as one—it’s ChatGPT. While most people think of it as a writing or brainstorming assistant, for me it’s become a real-world companion that helps me see and understand the world a little more clearly.

When you live with low vision, you get used to improvising. I’ve used magnifiers, accessibility settings, and even my phone’s camera to make everyday tasks easier. But ChatGPT has added an entirely new layer of usefulness—especially on a mobile device.

There are times when I’m out and about, maybe reading an instruction label or trying to make sense of small print on a product. Instead of struggling or trying to zoom in just right, I can take a photo and ask ChatGPT to read it for me. It gives me the information clearly and quickly, which helps me move on with my day.

Another area where it really shines is color identification. I’m colorblind, so when I’m working on something visual—like a thumbnail, flyer, or post in Canva—I can upload an image and ask ChatGPT to identify the colors for me. It’ll tell me what they are, describe their tone, and even provide hex codes so I can match or reuse those colors accurately later on.

That might sound like a small thing, but when you’re creating something visual, color confidence matters. It’s easy for me to miss when something is slightly off or doesn’t contrast well. ChatGPT gives me an extra set of eyes—one that never second-guesses what it sees.

For anyone with low vision or color challenges, it’s worth exploring how AI tools like this can become part of your everyday accessibility toolkit. It’s not just about making things easier—it’s about unlocking more of what you can do.
